Welcome to the world of Frenchic flair, where we unveil the secret to transforming your home's dark wooden features with effortless elegance. The hottest trend sweeping through the Frenchic community has made its mark, combining simplicity and effectiveness in a way that captivates homeowners and decorators alike. Say goodbye to lengthy and costly renovations of those aged timber beams, as we bring you the perfect solution that is both budget-friendly and user-friendly. Prepare to be amazed as we take you on a step-by-step journey of how you can brighten and rejuvenate your old wooden beams using the magic of Frenchic Paints' Creme De La Creme and Browning Wax
When it comes to any Frenchic Paint project, proper preparation is key! Begin by giving the wooden beams a quick brush-off to remove any cobwebs or dust, followed by a thorough once-over with a bucket of hot water and Sugar Soap for a pristine surface.
For the best results, it is recommended to lightly sand the surface with medium/fine grade sandpaper, creating a gentle key that allows the paint to fully soak in. However, in this specific project, sanding is only necessary if your timber beams have a varnish coating. If the timber is raw or has a rough texture, you can proceed without sanding. Get ready to embark on a transformation journey that will breathe new life into your old wooden beams!
Now, get ready for the exciting part - Painting! The beauty of this project lies in its artistic freedom, allowing you to customise the finished look according to your preferences. You have full control over the intensity of the Browning wax stain, giving you the opportunity to layer and build up the darkness to your liking. This means you don't have to worry about achieving a flawlessly pristine coat of Creme De La Creme as the base since it will eventually be covered with the captivating browning wax, preserving the raw and rustic charm of the timber.
Based on previous customer experiences, a good base formula to start with is x1 Coat of Creme De La Creme versus x2 coats of Browning Wax. From there, feel free to continue layering to suit your preference. This technique has proven to yield fantastic results - we’ve included some pictures of our favourite transformations using this fabulous Frenchic trend! All of the photos were posted by the fantastic community on the Facebook Frenchic Fan Forum Page
As we conclude this journey into the world of Frenchic magic, we hope you're feeling inspired to embark on your own transformational adventure. Brightening old wooden beams with Frenchic Paints' Creme De La Creme and Browning Wax is not only a trend but an artful expression of your style and taste. With the simple yet effective steps we've shared, you can revitalize your living space and infuse it with timeless elegance. So, roll up your sleeves, grab your paintbrush, and let the creativity flow.

]]>It’s officially less than two months until Christmas Day and if that isn’t a little terrifying then I don’t know what it is. With less than 60 days on the cards, it's time to start thinking about presents! Presents are the absolute best and worst part of the festive period. On the one hand, people give you presents! You also get to buy really wonderful things for your loved ones - which is so nice. But on the other hand... how do you kindly explain to your Ma that, while you appreciate the really fancy pair of earrings, you’ve never had your ears pierced? What do you get your One that you're seeing but not seeing seeing? Is it alright to buy your Dad a sweater two years in a row? Thankfully, there is one super easy solution to squash all gift related worries: books. Here's why a book makes the very best gift.
Giving someone a great book is basically sending them on a wonderful mental vacation for free! All of the amazing new adventures without the rubbish airport waits. Neil Gaiman once said “ Books make great gifts because they have whole worlds inside of them. And it's much cheaper to buy somebody a book than it is to buy them the whole world!”
Now - I know this doesn't sound like a huge selling point… but let me tell you when it's one in the morning on Christmas day and you’re trying to wrap an awkward sized kids toy, a candle or a basketball with no box - A rectangle book is going to look reaaaal good.
Books are very affordable which means you get to shower your people with thoughtful gifts that don’t end up costing a fortune. Yes, there might be a limited edition or a sturdy hardback, but paperbacks and second hand books are fairly well priced. Also on that note - there’s no need for accessories like batteries or add ons - Bonus.
Tired of arguing with your brothers about politics and the long lasting repercussions of unaddressed family trauma had on your childhood? Buy him a book. A well-written book is a wonderful way to help point them in the right direction, and saves yourself the energy of another Facebook rant. I can guarantee there’s an expert out there with a wealth of knowledge all readily available in paperback form. I'm in no way suggesting that you should try to sneakily brainwash your relatives through quality, diverse reading material... but… a book is a great gateway gift.
We all know that re-gifitng is a taboo subject that we don’t like to talk about, however re-gifting a Book is entirely different. Gifting someone a book that you have read and adored so much so that you wish to share it with them is both incredibly thoughtful and cost-effective. It’s a win-win.
The wonderful thing about Books is that there is something out there for everyone. When people say they’re not a big reader or they don’t enjoy books - it’s just that they haven’t found their right one. Books come in every style, genre, and language. Whether you’re buying for a crime busting mystery lover, a hopeless romantic or your sister who just went plant based and needs some new recipes to experiment with. You can find the perfect book for anyone.
According to science, reading makes people more empathetic. And apparently people who read live longer, too. By giving someone a book, you’re basically gifting them a long and beautiful life full of kindness and great stories. And, while that's kind of hard to prove, it seems clear that readers are more likely to be kind and alive, so giving a book makes the world a measurably nicer place to live in.
Long after that book is gone the stories read and shared will last a lifetime. By giving a book you’re giving a story, and stories last forever.

With the cost of living continuing to rise, it's no surprise that everyone is looking for easy and efficient energy saving solutions. One very simple way to save money on your energy bills is to switch from halogen bulbs to new energy efficient LED. Here’s a guide to LED technology and why you might consider LED Light Bulbs for your home.
These miniature powerhouses are by far energy efficient options overall, however you will need to spend a little more initially. Each LED uses up to 90% less energy than incandescent bulbs, and have a lifespan of up to 25 years. A single LED light could save you up to €200 in its lifespan compared to a traditional bulb.
PROS
|
|
CONS |
100% most energy efficient bulb | Will often cost more upfront compared to other lighting types, although in the bigger picture this will be offset by their lower energy consumption and longer lifespan.
Longest lifespan – up to 25 years |
There is a possibility you’ll have to upgrade your dimmer switch when changing to LED (there are dimmable LED options available) |
|
Familiar shapes and aesthetics as classic bulbs
Instant light |
||
Works in low temperatures |
||
Cool to the touch |
The most universal option for energy saving bulbs. Great value, available in a wide range of sizes and outputs, and roughly 75% more efficient than the traditional incandescent bulb.
PROS
|
|
CONS |
10-year lifespan (approx. 10,000 hours of use) |
Not instant brightness as the bulb takes time to reach full light capacity. Newer CFLs are better, but they’re not the best choice for areas like kitchens and bathrooms where you’d need bright light quickly.
|
|
Available in various colour temperatures (cool to warm) |
You need to be careful when disposing of CFLs as they contain a small amount of mercury
|
|
Good balance between price and energy savings | Not compatible with a dimmer switch
|
They tend to be temperature sensitive and don’t work well in outdoor areas like the garage or shed |
See our full range of CFL Bulbs here
At least 30% more energy efficient than tungsten bulbs, have a lifespan of up to two years. Similar quality and light to the traditional incandescent bulb.
PROS
|
|
CONS |
Cheapest options for energy saving bulbs |
Very short lifespan in comparison to LED and CFL lights
|
|
No warm-up time |
Far less energy efficient than LED and CFL options
|
|
Compatible with dimmer switch |
See our full range of Halogen Bulbs here
Replacing one 60W incandescent bulb with a CFL bulb can reduce your electricity bill by around €10 a year. Replacing the bulb with an energy saving LED bulb can save you almost €12.50 a year. An average Irish home will have between 30 - 50 bulbs. Converting to LED could save between €375 - €625 on your yearly energy bill. It’s true, switching to LED will cost more up front, however LED can have a 25 year life span, so you’ll definitely make your money back in the long run. Halogen bulbs are the cheapest immediate replacement for incandescent bulbs, but you won't notice a huge impact on your energy bill and you’ll most likely have to replace them within 2 years.
Wattage is the measurement of power consumption, not necessarily the brightness of the bulb. As energy efficient bulbs use less wattage, it’s not recommended to rely on this measurement alone when replacing your older incandescent bulbs. The correct measurement to gauge brightness is actually the Lumen output. Here’s a breakdown of Wattage vs Lumen Output:
|
|
|
100W | 1200 - 1300 | Rooms where you need very bright light. Also great for large rooms with a single light fitting. |
60W | 650 - 700 | The most common type of bulb – good for average-sized rooms or larger rooms with more than one light fitting. |
40W | 350 - 400 | Single reading lamps, or fittings that take more than one bulb. |
25W | 200 - 225 | Use these as ambient lights, or interior lights in cupboards, closets etc. |
An LED Light Bulb will reach full brightness as soon as it’s switched on. Often, CFL bulbs can take a few seconds to warm up
You can choose the best light for your space. A traditional tungsten bulb has a warm yellow tone to them. The LED equivalent is known as warm white or soft white with a Colour Rendering Index (CRI) of at least 80.
It indicates how well a bulb highlights colour. Many bulbs can have a similar “soft warm” light, but the bulb with a higher CRI will showcase colours with a stronger vibrancy. You would use a bulb with a higher CRI in a room where colour is an important design feature. A CRI of 80 is a suitable benchmark for most rooms.
Colour temperature is how we gauge the warmth or coolness the light appears. The measurement is in degrees Kelvin (K). The warmer the light ( i.e yellow or orange light) the lower the value: 2700K - 3000K. The cooler the light (i.e blue or white light) the higher the value: 5000K - 6500K. You would use cooler lights in rooms where you’d want maximum visibility, like a kitchen or a bathroom. Warmer, softer light is best used in rooms where you want to relax, like a bedroom or living room.
Yes there is a tiny trace of mercury in CFLs, however not enough to harm people. We’d recommend you still be mindful when cleaning away broken lamps.
LEDs and halogen bulbs can go into your normal household waste, but due to the small amount of mercury contained in CFL bulbs, they have to be recycled properly. A quick search online will help you locate your nearest council recycling point, or bring them into us at Weirs of Baggot St and we can dispose of them for you.

How much paint do I need for this project? How many coats of paint are needed? If you’re asking these questions, you’re not alone. Buying an insufficient amount of paint and you only end up back and forth to buy more. Buying an excessive amount of paint and you wind up with cans stacked up and unused in the shed (although this can come in handy for little touch ups!) If only such a thing as a paint calculator existed, eh? Well, you’re in luck, because we’re here to let you know just how simple it is to calculate the paint you’ll need with just three easy steps, no guesstimates necessary.
The first thing you’ll need to do is find a measuring tape and note down the height and width of the area you want to paint. Once you have that figure, multiply the height and the width together to find the square meter measurement. Deduct any surfaces you won't be painting, like windows or doors, by using the same calculation method and subtracting it from the total.
Second step is to divide your total surface area (from above) by the estimated surface area per litre that should be outlined on the tin of paint you’re looking at. The tin or product description might say "typical coverage is 8-12 metres squared per litre” see here.
It’s completely fine if you don’t have the exact measurements of your space - below is a rough estimate of coverage per litre:
Interior Wood or Metals: A 500mL tin is perfect for an internal door or the trim in a small room
Feature Wall: A 1 litre tin is plenty to cover a 2.5m interior wall
Small Room: Roughly 3 litres is suitable to paint the walls in a 2m x 2m or a similar room
Medium Room: 5 litres is recommended to cover all walls in a 4m x 4m or a similar room
Instead of leaving it stacked in the back of the garden shed, why not get creative and try upcycling! Upcycling furniture has become a huge trend as we all look towards more sustainable practices in our everyday lives. New Blog on Upcycling coming soon!

]]>Stepping into 2022 with an air of anticipation and hope, we actively welcome the calming influences of nature into our homes to brighten our interiors. Drawing inspiration from the flora and fauna around us, dark greens enable us to bring the outdoors in. From rich and earthy forest greens to dusted green-greys, dark greens have established themselves as a must have paint colour for the modern home.
Rich in colour and depth, dark greens are tones that we naturally gravitate towards. Choosing how you incorporate this colour scheme in your home is essential in establishing the ambience of the space. Dark greens can be sophisticated and dramatic or well-grounded and balanced. Dark Greens like Four Arches and Sweet Caper from the Contemporary Collection are steadily becoming staple features in any colour scheme. We’ve hand selected a variety of our favourite dark green paint hues for you to be inspired by. Continue reading to envision how you can incorporate this trend into your own home.
Whether you’re completely redecorating or you’re looking to refresh your favourite room, accent walls are a simple, yet effective way of adding dimension and character to a space. Dark greens are extremely versatile and can beautifully accentuate brass, blacks, browns and natural woods, which means the dark green colour scheme works well as an accent or feature colour.
You’re guaranteed to add a sophisticated touch to your home when you introduce a deep forest green like Christmas Wreath as an accent colour. An accent wall can highlight the features of a room and draw attention to architectural elements of your home. Pictured above we have a beautiful example of how effective it is to use a dark shade like Christmas Wreath to further accentuate the feature wall, making it a focal point of the room.
Most homes will have neutral colour schemes throughout. Dark, mossy greens like Sweet Caper can work in perfect harmony with warm, creamy neutral tones to establish a balanced, down to earth atmosphere.
Batch Loaf from the Contemporary Collection is a stone toned neutral that pairs particularly well with dark greens. Another neutral to consider here is Salter Stone, this shade has a taupe undertone that is strong and subtle at the same time. Paired well, it will allow the richness of Sweet Caper shine through.
Colour drenching is a dramatic painting technique in which one chosen colour is painted across multiple surfaces in one space. The most popular choice for colour drenching in a space is painting the walls and woodwork (such as kitchen cabinetry or skirtings) in the one colour. Colour drenching can elevate a space with a sophisticated and contemporary look that is far from conventional. Opting for a rich green shade using this painting technique will leave your interior feeling cosy and comforting.
Standing Tall is an exquisite woodwork shade making it the perfect candidate for this bold painting technique. Colour drenching your space in Standing Tall will create a bold and striking impact in your home. Design an atmosphere of relaxation and tranquility with a soothing green-grey like Standing Tall.
So you see, the possibilities to explore with these dark green paint shades are endless. ]]>Time is ticking with almost a month before the big day and people are starting to make plans to get their Christmas Tree up and decorated. The beauty about decorating a Christmas Tree is that it’s completely up to you and your tastes - however there are a few non-negotiables. We want you to have the most magical festive season possible and seeing as we all missed out last year, we have extra celebrating to do! Whether you’re planning on switching up your style this year, or it's the first time you’re designing your tree - here's our must have tips for every Christmas Tree
Not to state the obvious, but before we can even consider the decorations we need to start with the basics - the tree. Not everybody has the luxury of space to accommodate a big, gorgeous 8ft tree, but that doesn’t mean you have to compromise your desired aesthetic. Map out where in your home you’ll put your tree and determine what size you’ll go for.
As well as this, there is the age old question of artificial vs real? Whilst it’s hard to beat the scent of Christmas tree pine, they can be quite messy and look a little dry and lifeless by the end of the festive period. There is nothing wrong with a fake tree - it’s more economical and environmentally friendly and you can even experiment outside of the classic green, or try another colour (think pink, silver, or gold).
To ensure you have the perfect, coordinated Christmas Decorations you’ll need to plan one cohesive theme. Whether it’s catering to one colour, a minimalist contemporary style, or going all out with a multicolour maximalist design loaded with ribbons, baubles and the works. Knowing where to start is paramount. An additional factor to consider when choosing your theme is whether you like to update your decorations every year or if you prefer to choose timeless pieces with sentimental value
What is a Christmas tree without a touch of sparkle? Next up you’ll have to consider some bright lights to draw attention to your well-decorated design. Again, there’s a wealth of possibilities, be it a subtle string light in bright white or a soft warm white. Or, if you’re in search of a standout piece, you can try something with some additional clip pieces, shaped in hearts or stars.
For the Baubles, think about the dimensions of your tree and how many variations of design you want to include. Naturally, if you’re constrained to a smaller sized tree, but you still want to explore playful, considerate designs you’ll need to invest in petite baubles that don't overwhelm the tree. On top of this, it's really important to consider the spacing between decorations to create a well balanced tree. We want to avoid having a super busy side of the tree vs a sparse corner
As always, the devil is in the details. One thing that should never be forgotten is covering the base of the tree. Tree Skirts are a must have when it comes to your Christmas Tree - after all, why go into all that effort to create a magical Christmas tree design, only to have a messy looking base? Consider using a nice blanket, throw, old table cloth or even buying a cut of hessian (burlap) from your local hardware store.
And of course, we get to the pinnacle of tree decorating, the topper. There's plenty of beautiful tree topper options out there, and the great thing again is that it’s totally your choice. Whether you’re looking for a traditional star or angel or you want to find a fun, pop culture reference - you’ll want to pick something to be your tree's main focal point. No matter what you choose, the most important thing is to ensure it's not wonky once you finally put it on!

We love setting the table no matter the time of year, but there is something quite magical about setting the table for Christmas. Christmas dinner is a wonderful tradition for many households and in most cases, it's the main event of the day. The Christmas table is the place you get to sit down, reflect and share a meal with your loved ones. We have found that adding in a few simple and thoughtful things is all it takes to make something seem extra special and most importantly, meaningful. Here’s a few of our top tips for creating the Perfect Christmas Table.
We LOVE to use greens, flowers, herbs, or anything growing outside of the home. The best way to stay in the season is to use what is already growing around you. Nature knows best, don’t fight it. We promise every time it will be beautiful and just using simple texture and contrast rules while staying in a simple palette will do the trick. This time of year, Pine leaves or Eucalyptus work magic as do herbs such as Rosemary and Thyme.
There is nothing that great candles or any type of indirect light source cannot work its magic on. We adore tapered dinner candles and paired with some simple candlesticks you can create a beautiful moment in the centre of the table. We love the varying and intermittent heights that look good from every angle of the table. One trick to use with varying height of dinner candles, is to start with your ends. Place the lowest candle on each end and then fill in the middle. Start with them interchanging in size in a pattern and then break the pattern just by two or four of them switching places. It is an easy way to create a carefree organic feeling to the table.
Don’t be afraid to experiment with some of your favourite textures and items in your home! Hessian, Linen sheets and Woolen throws. All of these household items can create wonderful texture throughout the table.
We love to have something on a holiday table that speaks of tradition and heritage. You may have a set of glasses or a dish, candlesticks, a tablecloth, or even a table that speaks of that for you. Bring that heirloom piece in this year and make it a focal point. If it is the table don’t toss a linen on it, let it shine. If it is the candlesticks, forego anything taking attention away from them. Don’t over complicate the story.
We can have the perfect, crisp linen napkins that are folded in straight lines, silverware that shines and that is all well and good, but don’t forget the most important thing about a Christmas table is the people you share it with. Embracing the imperfections is the easiest and quickest way to a stress-free and beautiful gathering.

]]>As well as shop-bought decor, there are loads of awesome DIY ideas that you can recreate, to not only dress up your exterior space, but also to have some fun activities with the kids. We've gone all out with paint, pumpkins, wreaths galore and a healthy dose of googly eyes and giant spiders to make these Halloween Door Decorations spook-tacular!
So keep your eyes peeled and discover these jaw dropping Hallows Eve front door designs that will make your scream! You‘ll have the whole neighbourhood itching to get a sneak peek at your door!
Let’s start out with a super simple, but impactful Mummies Door! All you’ll need is some funky craft paper to make horrifying monster eyes, which you can attach with double sided tape. You’ll also need some white bandages that you can buy from your local pharmacy. Wrap your door top to bottom in bandages, leaving room for the eyes. And hey presto! You’ve got yourself a frightening Mummified door with very minimal effort. The accompanying faux spider and web decor on the railings are equally frightening features in themselves.
To this day Hocus Pocus is still one of my ultimate all time favourite Halloween movies and as such, a Witches door had to feature in our Halloween blog! We’re looking for black craft paper to cut out the silhouette of Bats or Crows/Ravens which we can attach to the door and surrounds. Find an old broom that you could spray paint in black and sit it next to a cauldron filled with pumpkins and Halloween goodies!
Looking for a Halloween door decoration idea that only costs a few dollars, but is big on impact? A little masking tape is all you need to magic up a 'Halloween monster' design.
If you're wondering how to decorate a front porch and keep the kids entertained, get them on board with cutting out the materials needed and sticking duties. Like Dr. Frankenstein, they can see their masterpiece come to life!
'This was made with just using black, white and red poster board from her local stationary story and then Command strips to attach the poster board to the door. Super easy, non permanent, no tools needed!' explains Liz Morrow, interior designer and DIY evangelist
If the idea of novelty Halloween door decoration ideas gives you the ick, there are more conservative ways to introduce Autumnal designs to your front porch
Wreaths are no longer just for Christmas, as homeowners opt to decorate their doors all year round, and Halloween and fall are no exception. So set the scene with a beautiful autumnal and insta-worthy display.
It can be as simply as adding a basket next to the door, bursting with crisp autumnal oranges and reds, through artificial flowers and mini pumpkins, or all-out with big floral arches and displays around the door frames.
And if a fresh pumpkin isn't your thing, or you want a low-maintenance look, invest in a ceramic pumpkin that you can also personalize to create any theme or colour you desire. This can be pulled out year after year, so is a cost-effective, and environmentally-friendly solution that won't see you dashing to your local store or pumpkin patch.
Unsurprisingly, nature-inspired interiors are at the highest of the list, as we ease ourselves into colder months by bringing the outside in. After spending over a year stuck inside our homes, it’s no surprise that people are leaning towards nature and greenery and they can do this by introducing warm nature-inspired interiors!
We’ve all been brainstorming and building our inspiration boards, and the results are an image of warmth and cosiness.
The air is getting cooler as people begin to swap their parkas for longer, thicker coats. It’s natural that you’ll want to bring some warmth into your home, we’ve found that the easiest and most effective way to do this is through injecting colour into your living spaces. Now, it’s not quite realistic to expect people to repaint their homes every season! So, a great way to bring in that warmth is by swapping out your everyday bed throws, pillows, cushions and candles and dressing up the rooms with Autumnal decor and art
Research has proven that the most popular colour is Dark Green, followed by warm neutrals. Shades of green have always been popular in interiors, but dark green specifically has regained popularity the past few years and will be a prominent feature during this Autumn season. A fantastic way to revitalise your day to day space is to add a bold focal piece of dark green furniture against a warm neutral wall. Accessorise with earthy hues to create a beautiful nature-inspired space
More than 50,000 pins were dedicated to the art of layering, an intentionally nonchalant design approach that mixes colour, material and pattern. To layer effectively without overwhelming a room, choose patterned pieces in similar tones.
Follow these easy steps to become the envy of your neighbours!

On Thursday the 22nd of April 2020 we were lucky enough to tune in to a fantastic Facebook live hosted by Colourtrend Paints and featuring Interior Design Superstar, Rachel Hobbs. Throughout the Live Chat both Daragh and Rachel gave us some brilliant insight into bringing colour to your outdoor living. We jotted down some notes below:
-When considering external paint go one shade darker as the light outside is much brighter
-Don’t be afraid of Dark colours as they create an anchor and help everything feel more grounded
-Exterior paint can be daunting as there’s a lot more paint involved. Best thing is to start small, choose one colour that you love and then build from there.
-When choosing house colours start with two shades you enjoy and build each with a toning shade. Rach suggests similar light shade for windows and trim, dark rich shade for plinth and fun tonal shade for front door
-Rach recommended Burrowing, Mucky Swan and Peat Basket. All very earthy tones that would make a good background to naturally compliment the garden/surrounds, but could also make a statement
-Rachel prefers hints of green or earthy tones as they tend to be warmer than cold greys or blacks like Dressage. Tones with greens and browns tend to bring more joy
-Note: Green is a relaxing, soft colour and speaks to the natural environment of Ireland. Any shade of green will sit comfortably in a garden.
Q.What goes well with a Navy? Looking for a warm neutral
Rachel explains working with tonal colours. Examples: start with Watch House and move up or down towards Covert Feather or Foraging.
Keep in mind multiple variables to take into account before choosing exterior colours. Prep and research are most important.
